Libraries

Women's Library (E1)

Feminist library (just round corner from LCC)

Good resources.

My project

Over Easter I was in South Africa to start a long term project I have been planning for a while, using football as a way of looking at South Africa. The first stage of this was a series of posed portraits, alongside looser stuff, that I shot in collaboration with another photographer, Josh Lustig. My next trip to South Africa is in mid June for the World Cup, and for the dissemination brief I have 3 aims:

1: To work with project space/gallery Blank Projects in Cape Town, potentially showing World Cup/football related work in a rolling show as well as hosting World Cup related events (probably with a hint of irony).

2: To find interesting arenas to show the work I have already produced. The images are quite editorial in style and I'm hoping there will be opportunities to have them published in the run up to the World Cup.

3: To create new opportunites for making work in South Africa during the World Cup. One idea that Matthew suggested is to have some sort of photo blog while I'm out there, ideally for an established online publication. I'm also keen to develop the project in ways that are not straight up editorial/documentary.

I'll be posting major developments here, as well as more regularly on my own blog, so if anyone has any thoughts/ideas/suggestions I'd love to hear them either here, there or (gasp) in person.

Big Love

A message from Rational Rec
Rational Rec presents its second Open Dialogue
Matt Roberts Arts OpenFORUM
MRA Project Space, 25 Vyner Street, London E2 9DG
Friday 14 May 2010, from 6.30-9pm
At this second Rational Rec Open Dialogue event, artists Paul B Davis, Charlie Fox and Emma Hart, working together on the first Rational Rec collaborative commission , will discuss their plans for the project and its final presentation.

The artists propose that the outcome of the commission will be to create a publication setting out ideal rules and philosophies for collaboration, with concrete tasks that can be followed by anyone.

The artists will test around 20 rules and tasks live during the event. The rules will be presented to the audience, who will judge their efficacy, and initiate the process of editorial change that will continue throughout the project.

You are invited to this event to get involved with this process, to challenge the artists’ ideas and make your mark on their evolving rule book.
Background
What can artists do together that they can’t do on their own, and how does the idea of help and exchange inherent in collaboration feed into working processes and outcomes? How could these facets become visible, exposing the hidden costs of collaboration: compromise, plagiarism, antagonism, frustration, misunderstanding and mistranslation?

Paul B Davis, Charlie Fox and Emma Hart have each worked on so-called ‘organic’ collaborations in the past – where artists find each other and fuse their practices based on mutual interests, personal or professional. The current Rational Rec commission provides a more structured space for them to reflect on the methodologies they have used in the past, a pause to reconsider how they have collaborated in the past and how they intend to collaborate in the future. Inspired by commercial music and fine art collaborations – such as Snoop Dogg ‘featuring’ on the tracks of rival rappers, or Damien Hirst’s work with Louis Vuitton – and bringing these lessons into a non-commercial project, as well as being influenced by art movements such as the OuLiPo literary group; religious laws from the Methodist Book of Discipline; the ancient Greek Axiomatic system and their own experiences, the artists will consider what happens when artists work together and why is this often deemed “better” (is it more creative? more exciting?).
Attending the event
To take part in the event please email bookings@rationalrec.org.uk by Wednesday 12 May 2010 with ‘MRA’ as the subject header. This event has limited capacity.
Online presence

To view, simply click on the link on 14 May 2010, 6.30pm-9pm and you will be able to view the discussion for up to 7 days after the event. We will send a reminder on the day of the discussion event.

Feminist Science Fiction

Hi guys, this is most probably very specific to Jatinder, Terri and me, but may be of a side interest to you! Especially if you are in any way inspired by literature or science fiction. I'd recommend reading a few, they're pretty good.

Key Feminist Science Fiction Novels

- Herland - Charlotte Perkins Gilman 1915
- The Female Man - Joanna Russ 1970
- Woman on the Edge of Time - Marge Piercy 1976
- She - H. Rider Haggard (not necessarily fem sci-fi but a key text for us)
- The Left Hand of Darkness - Ursula K. Le Guin 1969
- Frankenstein - Mary Shelley (asexual reproduction)

Characters
- Wonderwoman / bionic woman
- Robotic woman - Maria in Fritz Lang's Metropolis
- Buffy the vampire slayer
- The amazon
- She who must not be named (She)
- Barbarella

We plan to involve the idea of a female only society, using this genre as our inspiration and contextual base.

There is a huge tradition for single sex utopias within literature and they generally have the same themes. Freedom from oppression of men, clean unpolluted worlds, highly evolved, etc. They are mostly written by women. There is not so much of a tradition for all male worlds, with the suggestion being that the status quo for men puts them in a better position, so there is no great fantasy in removing women.

- http://www.wiscon.info/ is the leading feminist science fiction convention

There is also the photographer Justine Kurland that Bruno mentioned in his talk. Boarding school films often become like a female utopia also I think... eg. Picnic at Hanging Rock, Innocence, Cracks - all 3 have sinister elements as well which is probably emphasized by the lack of resemblance to real life... all female, all same age.

Research around identity in art.

Hi Guys,

Here are some research ideas for anyone interested in art which investigates aspects of identity. Hope some of it might help inspire ideas.

/Mia

A few identity theme resources.

events, images, exhibitions etc regarding the theme of identity. For ideas maybe.

BLOGS- some interesting ones...

just spent way too long trying to make a list of the best/ most interesting photography blogs around and in a rather ocd manner (can you tell I have an issue with list making- exhibition list etc) have realized the internet makes anything definitive impossible- so here a list of some of the most interesting ones I  found- lots Matthew already mentioned-amongst a frightening amount of terrible ones- speaking of which not sure if I would recommend watching that show on Goldsmiths/ art students on BBC i player  that was mentioned- just spent rather too long with it and am feeling a bit sad/ annoyed about the pretentiousness of it- but also rather funny to watch.

Feb 27 - May 23, 2010
Trained as a musician and composer, French artist Céleste Boursier-Mougenot creates works by drawing on the rhythms of daily life to produce sound in unexpected ways. His installation for The Curve will take the form of a walk-though aviary for a flock of zebra finches, furnished with electric guitars and other instruments and objects. As the birds go about their routine activities, perching on or feeding from the various pieces of equipment, they create a captivating, live soundscape

In a time when millions of viewers have access to the Internet, video/cameras and home-editing suites, a circulated YouTube clip becomes a conversational spectacle overnight. With the proliferation and advancement of technology, the creative process itself has become more democratic and has enabled people en masse to become not only viewers but ‘creators’. TestBed 1 responds to popular practice by inviting artists working with the moving image to produce and present artworks using the prevalent modes of production readily available - in the context of a professional art space.

Participating artists will work in the Beaconsfield galleries from March to August in a series of residencies. During this time the public is invited to witness our galleries turn laboratories, turn performance and production sites. Check website for weekly schedule and FlatScreen programme.

SOAS/LSE

The Brunei Gallery at SOAS is open for the public to exhibit work and is a non-fee charging venue. This could be a possible option to use however it should be considered that SOAS is an institution that promotes cultures from Asia and Africa so much of the work displayed in the gallery is geared toward that.

If we do consider going down this route, would we have to centre our project around this? the institution would have a big role in how our project pans out.

Additionally, the gallery review proposals for exhibitions quarterly in the year so it might not be viable in terms of the time frame we have but should be considered if we want to continue on with this project after the "deadline"

http://www.soas.ac.uk/gallery/proposal/

Terri has also found a list of staff we can contact at LSE's anthropological department about displaying our work

http://www2.lse.ac.uk/anthropology/people/departmentalstaff.aspx

MJT

fact/fiction pre-proposal

Jatinder, Marianna and I are looking at an exploration between fact and fiction, anthropology, art science and narrative. At the moment we are looking into staging an exhibition and website proposing a historical or pseudo-scientific/anthropological or current 'find' of a society that we know nothing of.

We are going to incorporate our individual interests to create the work.
jatinder - anthropology
marianna - fiction narrative
terri - science/ factual

we are thinking about a mixed media installation; drawings, photographs, video, faked artifacts - medical reports etc.

We are not currently sure just exactly where we see the exhibition being seen ... the british museum or Wellcome institute seem a long way off (!!) so were are thinking possibly a pop up installation in SOAS or LSE anthropology depts? thoughts or suggestions...?

Photofriends

Hi, Chloe and I have been in discussion about collaborating on a piece together and were wondering if anyone else would be interested. Rather than working individually and coming together in the form of a book or exhibition, we want to work on a film (for example, we are both keen on experimenting with different media and forms) and seeing where this leads. So in the instance of a film it would be a shared concept then we each could take turns shooting and editing etc so it is one piece made collectively. This is quite broad but I don't think there is anyone else talking about collaborating in this way. From the work we produce we could then decide where to take it, the collaboration on the piece would be the main focus but from this we could see what fits and either produce a publication, exhibition etc. We haven't made any decisions on what the concept of the piece would be as this would obviously have to be a joint decision and so would need to form the group first. If this sounds interesting maybe we could meet tomorrow after contextual?
Some examples to make this a little clearer I hope: Abramovic and Ulay, Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin
Big love

Term starts and many of you are stuck abroad. London's birds chirp uninterrupted, a silver lining for some of us.

In the park Sunday I ran into a graduate student of the course India Roper Evans who alongside her contemporary at LCC Susana Sanroman has set up an organisation called Artcrunch, promoting young artists through pop up exhibitions. Negotiating pop up gallery space in the E&C shopping centre.

Saturday, 17 April 2010

Hi everyone. I am interested by claire and emiles idea about photographing a specific building and/or the people that work within that space and think it would be really nice to exhibit the images in or around the space . I have no idea about which building or why yet, need to do some research, but I like the idea of focusing on one building and working with a small group of workers with some really nice portraits. As I do not usually work with people I think it may be good to do this to have the experience with working with strangers. I want to talk it over with who ever else is interested on tuesday as I prefer to talk instead of blogging.

See you all on Tuesday.

Xx

Hi All,
I am interested in using the studios this term also, also think if we collaborate and get organised we can assist each other on our seperate projects to produce stronger work...

Just to let you know ... the book arts upstairs at lcc have open days every friday.

the idea about making work about a specific building, its inhabitants/workers the architecture the history of the building and whatever else is a good way of making a collaborative work makes the dissemination bit interesting as depending on the building work could be shown in it, or on the website etc. i have an idea about a project/building in camden and am trying to get a meeting with the people involved, will try to get more info before friday.

lets talk through stuff on tuesday lunctime.

Presentations

Just seen Matthews email sent out today saying that presentations for this project are next friday so I think we need to be really thinking about groups asap. It seems so few people have actually written on here, have groups already be made??

Jess

workshops

Hi, I'm really far from knowing what I want to do this term, have been reading through the posts but I want to do a bit of thinking and research before I approach people on ideas. I do however know that I really want to learn the grand art of book making and it was mentioned that this term we could request workshops in things. Jess has already mentioned making a book and a few other people I have spoken to are wanting to learn book making/binding. Requesting workshops is probably a thing that will come along after everyone has decided on what they are doing but I thought I might get the ball rolling and see what other workshops people would be interested in or like josh has said what kind of new things people are wanting to learn - this may be another way in to finding people to work with who have similar ideas, particularly as most ideas seem to be initially more about form and mode at this point

Ideas...

Hi everyone,

When we were first briefed about this project my initial thoughts were about creating some kind of publication (printed or online-probably the latter as it would make things a lot more achievable money-wise). Including interviews with established artists/photographers, maybe drawing on contacts made through the ppd project, inviting artists working in other mediums (whether at LCC or not...) to contribute as well as obviously using the bulk of the magazine to show case our own work... i think would all really help in our networking and confidence to do so. I think this mode of distribution of our work would also be a great opportunity to push ourselves in terms of working as a group, all taking on specific roles and responsibilities etc.

Obviously this idea is mainly about the mode of dissemination, i'm totally flexible about content and think it would be good if this was quite broad anyway to allow to diversity....something that could be discussed and decided as a group. The magazine and publishing industry is somewhere i can really see myself working in in the future so would like to use this project to explore this and maybe it could turn into something that as a group we could continue beyond this term.

Although only a few people have put ideas up here but it seems that the general ideas are looking to culminate in an exhibition... this is something i'm also very interested in doing and like the ideas being put forward about exploring the theme of identity, how and through what this is done (Mia).

Have people already begun forming groups? And does anyone know when we have to present our projects to the group and tutors?

Let me know if anyone is interested in the ideas above.

Potential Idea

Hi everyone, hope your all doing well and cushti!

Ive been thinking how to approach this project and just had an idea i think is worth mentioning, it is in two parts:

Part 1
For many of the previous projects i have been using video, this has meant that I haven't yet had the opportunity to properly learn and explore the technical usage of studio spaces i.e. lighting, model directing etc.. I am prepared to devote a lot of time in the studio and learn to create high grade photographic images. It would be great to get a group of people to help each other out and to develop shooting and studio skills together, in a gruop we would be able to progress a lot faster as every person would bring something different. We would end up obtaining skills and experience that can be utilised in the 'real world' so to speak...

Part 2
Most of us are going to have to financially support ourselves after we leave LCC and it would be great to be able to do that using photography (Its one of the many reasons I came to university). As the project develops I would like to take some sort of entrepreneural approach - this could involve exploring the market, creating a website, approaching companies... essentially offering a photographic service and marketing it. This seems like to perfect opportunity to do so because we have access to loads of top notch equiment for free.

This is just a loose idea and requires more thought, It could tie in with other projects people suggested.
Also the two parts are not bound to each other, for example if someone wanted to develop their studio skills but then doesn't have any interest in the second part then it wouldnt matter and if someone felt that they do not need to add to their studio skills but thinks they could contribute to the entrepreneural aspect then that would be cool also. It is very open at the mo...

Let me know what you think.

Public space, buildings or objects.

Hi People,

This is just something that's been floating around my head for a little while now. I'm still undecided but I'm leaning heavily towards reinterpreting and experimenting with public space and objects, exploring social context, identity or how people are able to identify with them (Mia and Emile..), if at all, possibly toying with that idea through installation, adding or taking away an ability to identify with said object or place. Right now it's pretty broad in terms of where or how this can take place, but I like Emile's suggestion of identifying one area/place/building and all of us working around that in our own ways.

http://www.christojeanneclaude.net/wr.shtml

I've been looking at the work of Christo and Jeanne-Claude as an example for an approach, environmental art etc.. Obviously matching the scale would be impossible, but this is definitely something I'm interested in and would like to expand on. The place we choose would then also become our exhibition space, or at least where possible.

I've been in touch with an architect I met at an opening for a place he designed. He was very interesting and had a lot to say about the sort of work we try to do. He suggested a collaboration and I've already spoken to him about this terms project. I think he could add an interesting perspective to this whole thing.

I think if we get together and throw around some ideas etc, we could come up with some interesting..what do people think? constantincerdan@gmail.com

Identity and Exhibiting

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to let everyone know what I have been considering for this project, and if anyone has similar ideas or is interested in some aspect of what Im proposing, do let me know.

I am really interested in ideas around Identity and how one identifies oneself or through what? Is it through our experiences, our relationships, work, society or what? How do people see and define themselves and their role in whatever society they feel like they belong to..
This is obviously a very wide theme which I would like to narrow down, depending on other ideas and interests and the execution of it. It could be a very personal project about yourself, exploring own relationships to surroundings and trying to figure out what exactly it is that shapes us and affects us. But it could also be about a seperate group of people, in a specific geographical place or of some other interest. Im open to any suggestions..

It might cross over with your idea Emile, depending on which people you are interested in and how you want to approach them..

In terms of my own work, I am personally interested in doing 2D work at the moment. This is partly because I havent really done much of it and have some ideas around mixing photography and drawing which I want to finally fully explore, but also I am very aware that when submitting portfolios to schools and exhibitions, very often they are only interested in images. So I would really like to use this term to finally start making really nice quality images. Im doing a lot of research on painting and fine art photography and have been looking at all kinds of galleries and what kind of artistst they represent..

However, this doesnt mean that I only want to work with people who are doing 2D as well. I think an exhibition of very different approaches to the same theme could be really interesting.. whether it be installation, video, poems, whatever. The important part is to agree on the concept and approach I think.

Which leads me on to final outcome. Im really interested in doing some kind of an exhibition. I think this could be a great way of getting contacts, networking, showing people what kind of work we each do and to build some confidence in terms of experience with practical circumstances, exhibiting and showing work to other people than our tutors and friends. To invite the public, other art students or any type of people we want to expose the work to or even build connections with.

These are my thoughts for now, im very interested in other people's ideas or imputs..

Let me know

Tunnel 228

Hi Guys, hope everyone is having a lovely Easter!

I thought I’d pop up on here a few ideas of what I’d like to do in this project, and if anyone likes the sound of it, or is thinking along the same lines, then lets get together and discuss our ideas!

Last year I took part in an art project called Tunnel 228, which was a collaboration between Kevin Spacey and The Old Vic and Punchdrunk – a performance, interactive theatre company. The project was set in a Tunnel (228 – Duh!) which is an old train tunnel underneath waterloo station (the entrance is located in Leake Street – about a 20min walk from uni). In the tunnels, many artworks and sculptures were displayed and were interacted with in live performances by Punchdrunk’s actors.

Only 15,000 tickets were up for grabs (for free) and could only be booked online and the performance ran for 15 days. When you entered the tunnel, you were given a ‘flu mask’, and were told not to take it off as you might ‘catch something’. My job was to basically stand around (in a balaclava and a big coat), watch the audience and sometimes scare them!

They had artwork and sculptures by Mark Jenkins, Slinkachu Olympia Scarry, Petroc Sesti, Anthony Micallef, Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller and they were dotted around the dark tunnels for you to find and explore. The whole atmosphere was amazing, very spooky and surreal and I really enjoyed being involved.

Here are a few quotes from reviews about the Tunnel -

‘The whole thing takes place in a network of Victorian tunnels formerly run by British rail, but which have sat disused since the 1970s. During WWII they were even used as a mortuary for victims of the flu pandemic. "This is all about bringing art and theatre together into something ambitious and wonderful” says Spacey.’

“Producer Hamish Jenkinson says: "It's a totally immersive experience - expect to be spooked and surprised”

IDEA-

So I was thinking that putting on a show of our work in a space that is unfamiliar for work to be shown is an idea that I am very interested in. I’d love to create an atmosphere in which our audience could view our work, other than that of a typical gallery. What does everyone think of this idea? Would any one else be interested in doing something like this?

Alternatively, I’d also be interested in creating a book or magazine with our work and ideas in!

The Museum of Non Participation

This project popped into my head when I was thinking about our brief, check it out, quality example of work that's collaborative on many different levels (im not gonna re-hash the project info, go read it!). It culminated with an exhibition at the back of a Pakistani barber shop in Bethnal Green, which was quality.

Art Angels got lots of interesting previous, present and future stuff going on so have a look at the rest of their website too.

Loose idea

Greetings from sunny Cape Town (HA)

I thought a way to approach this project might be to identify a building/place/area that's interesting to different people for different reasons, then all work around that, responding to it in different ways. Whether it be looking at the physical space, the history or the cultural significance, there could be a billion different ways to respond to one central place. This could then culminate in an exhibition in that place that takes advantage of (or caters to) the community that already (potentially) exists there.

Obviously, without actually suggesting a particular place this remains very loose, but people could put some ideas forward in response, and it could even split off in different directions for different groups? What do you lot think?
